‘Birds come out on top in testy battle with Regina

VANCOUVER Hannah Clayton-Carroll scored her second straight game winner, this time with less than a minute remaining, to give the UBC Thunderbirds (4-1-0-0) a 4-3 win over the Regina Cougars (3-2-0-0) at the Co-operators Centre Friday night.

It was a rollercoaster affair that saw 60 combined penalty minutes and 15 power plays, but the T-Birds came back from deficits twice to earn their fourth straight win.

"We really came together as a group and found ways to stay focused as best we could," said UBC head coach Graham Thomas. "There were a lot of stressful situations and a lot of emotion but we were proud of our girls to be able to stay on task."

After a scoreless first period, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead by the mid point of the second. But Celine Tardif's third of the season was followed six minutes later by a Brie Bellerive power play goal to tie the game heading into the third.

The Cougars re-took the lead just over a minute into the final period on a power play goal of their own, but Ireland Perrott's second of the season from Emily Costales and Mathea Fischer tied it once again at the 9:39 mark.

Just when overtime seemed inevitable it was Clayton-Carroll who earned the 'Birds the valuable three points with her third goal of the season from Tardif and Kirsten Toth.

Tory Micklash was busy making 39 saves in the win while the T-Birds were outshot 42-35. UBC finished 1-for-8 on the power play while Regina went 1-for-7.

The win moves UBC into sole possession of first place in the Canada West and the 'Birds can make it five straight wins with a win in Saturday's rematch.

"That would be huge for us right now on back-to-back road trips," said Thomas who aside from Friday night's win was also glad to see a pair of veterans in Kathleen Cahoon and Alexa Ranahan make a return to the lineup. "It's going to be a big challenge tomorrow."

Puck drop in Regina is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PT.
