High Jump
The elder statesman of the Thunderbirds contingent in Rio is UBC School of Kinesiology graduate and now three-time Olympian
Michael Mason. Mason has been one of Canada's top high jumpers for over a decade. The Thunderbird won the 2009 Summer Universaide and has both a Commonwealth and Pan-Am medal on his resume. Sunday in Rio, Mason made it to a height of 2.26 metres in the qualifying round.
The height wasn't enough to put him into the finals. If Rio becomes his final Olympics,
Michael Mason will go down as one of the greatest track and field athletes the University of British Columbia has ever produced.
Sailing
UBC's
Nikola Girke and
Luke Ramsay will be challenged to make the podium in the Narca 17 mixed sailing event in Rio. The Canadian duo have raced very well against the world class field at Marina da Gloria, but sit well back in 15th spot ahead of the double points final race on Wednesday.
Girke is a grad of the UBC School of Kinesiology and former member of the UBC women's rugby team. Ramsay graduated from the UBC School of Engineering with a degree in civil engineering.
