VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2015-16 campaign on Saturday, falling to the host Lewis-Clark State Warriors 5-1 at the Guardian Heating, Plumbing, and A/C tournament in Lewiston, Idaho.
The T-Birds scored their only run in the fifth inning. Down 1-0, UBC shortstop
Kyle McComb (Surrey, B.C.) earned a lead-off walk and then stole second. He moved to third on a groundout before scoring on a double down the right-field line by
Griff Goyer (Burnaby, B.C.).
Lewis-Clark State, the No. 1 team in the NAIA, replied with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, on an RBI double by Emilio Alcantar and an RBI single by J. J. Robinson.
The Warriors added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to close out the scoring.
Along with his RBI, Goyer, playing right field, led UBC with two hits in four plate appearances.

Thunderbirds starter
Jeremy Newton (Toronto) gave up three earned runs in 5.1 innings of work, which also included six strikeouts and two walks.
UBC (8-1) will finish the Lewis-Clark State tournament on Sunday with a 10 a.m. PT game against the Corban (Ore.) Warriors, a team the T-Birds beat 4-2 on Friday.
