RECAP: T-Birds take 6-2 decision over Warriors in Idaho

VANCOUVER – Buoyed by a four-run fifth inning, the UBC Thunderbirds baseball team claimed a 6-2 win over the Corban Warriors in Sunday afternoon's finale of the Guardian Heating, Plumbing, and A/C tournament in Lewiston, Idaho.

Down 2-0 as they made their way to the plate in the fifth, the 'Birds got on the board as Tyler Enns (East St. Paul, Man.) singled to right field, but a poorly thrown ball not only allowed Enns to move to second, but gave Vinny Martin (Pender Island, B.C.) and John Whaley (Oakville, Ont.) a chance to score from second and third respectively.

Anthony Olson (Edmonton) then proceeded to knock out a double on the next pitch, driving Enns home. The Edmonton native crossed home plate himself just two batters later. After Brendan Rose (Calgary) grounded out to first, moving Olson to third, Bruce Yari (Waterloo, Ont.) stepped up and singled to the left, bringing in Olson and capping off the scoring for the inning.

Whaley increased the T-Birds' lead in the seventh inning. After a single, a steal, and a pitching error put the second-year left fielder in scoring position, Curry stepped up and drove him home with a single.

The final run of the afternoon came in the next frame, With Olson, Lucas Soper (Vancouver), and Yari already on base, Thunderbirds third baseman Anthony Cusati (Burnaby, B.C.) was walked, giving Olson his second run of the contest.

Connor Noble (Vancouver) earned the win for the 'Birds, as the 6-foot right-hnder threw seven complete innings, giving up just two runs on six hits, while putting up three strikeouts. Brad Smith (Vancouver) and Tyler Gillies (London, Ont.) came on in relief, pitching an inning apiece.

The T-Birds will be California dreaming next week, as they're set to hit up Santa Barbara to face the Westmont Warriors, ranked No. 16 in NAIA, for a three-game series from Friday, February 12 to Sunday, February 14. Games will start at 2 p.m. (PT) on the 12th and 14th, and at 12 noon (PT) on the 13th.

The 'Birds will then make the short trip down to Santa Clarita, Calif., to take on The Master's Mustangs, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, on Monday, February 14. The opening pitch for that contest is set to be thrown at 2 p.m. (PT).
