VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds didn't allow any Thompson Rivers WolfPack players to score in double digits in a 72-46 Canada West women's basketball victory on Friday night at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops, B.C.
"I thought it was a great team win. There were contributions from everyone, good defensive energy, and we're starting to show some chemistry with execution with our offence," said UBC head coach
Deb Huband. "It was a nice step forward to feel like were working together. We created some offence off our defence as well, and a few transition baskets. We shared the ball a lot better tonight and there was good decision making. Everyone contributed and they all brought energy, it kept us fired up."
Â
UBC led wire-to-wire in the 2016-17 Canada West opener for both squads. The Thunderbirds led 37-27 at the half, and then put the game away in the second half, clamping down on defence to hold the host WolfPack to just five points and zero field goals in the third quarter.
Â
"I thought the third quarter where our defensive tenacity gave us a bit of an advantage," said Huband. "Everyone contributed. We had a lot of energy and a lot of compete and they had some fun out there which is nice to see."
Â
For the game, TRU shot just 26.8 per cent (15-for-56) from the field against UBC's defence, while the T-Birds made 26 of their 64 shots (40.6 per cent).
UBC had four players in double figures, led by
Maddison Penn, who recorded 15 points.
Krysten Lindquist added 12 while
Kara Spotton and
Shilpa Khanna each tallied 10. Rookie forward
Keylyn Filewich had a team-high eight rebounds. TRU's top scorer was Shenise Sigsworth with nine points.Â
