UBC records road sweep to open 2016-17 conference season

VANCOUVER – For the second straight night, the UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team held the Thompson Rivers WolfPack to fewer than 50 points, securing a series sweep Saturday with a 58-38 victory in Kamloops, B.C.

Maddison Penn scored 16 points to lead UBC, which is now 2-0 in Canada West conference play. Kara Spotton tallied 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

"I think last night we played better than we did tonight," said UBC head coach Deb Huband. "I was a little disappointed in the level of our energy. We didn't take care of the ball as well tonight and had some defensive breakdowns at times. It's nice to get the win and get the sweep."

The Thunderbirds jumped out to an 8-0 lead to open the game, thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Penn, followed by a Spotton layup. Two Spotton foul shots capped off a 6-0 run, and rounded out the scoring in the first quarter, which ended 19-6 for UBC.

The gap was increased to 17 points midway through the second quarter and that was the difference at halftime (32-15), and at the end of the third (44-27).

UBC was ahead by as many as 24 points in the third quarter. Consecutive layups by Spotton finished off a 7-0 surge that began the second half, and gave the visitors a 39-15 advantage.

TRU never threatened in the final period, as the T-Birds used another big run, 14-3, to build their largest lead of the game (58-32) with less than two minutes left.

UBC has next weekend off, and will host its home-opening series Nov. 18-19 against Manitoba at War Memorial Gymnasium.
