SASKATOON – Saskatchewan natives played a huge role in helping the No. 10-ranked UBC Thunderbirds defeat the No. 8 Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. 
 
With the win, UBC earns a sweep of the Huskies to 11-6-3-2. The team takes over sole possession of first place in the Canada West standings. Saskatchewan falls to 8-8-3-3 with the loss. 
 
Much like Friday night's 2-1 win, UBC scored back-to-back goals in a short time span on Saturday to lock up the victory. 
 
Shiayli Toni (Saskatoon, Sask.) scored and Rebecca Unrau (Humboldt, Sask.) both hit the scoresheet early in the third period to give UBC a 3-1 advantage. 
 
Toni notched her third goal of the season at 0:22 of the third period with a shot over the left shoulder of Huskie goalie Cassidy Hendricks while the T-Birds were on a 5-on-3 power-play. Madison Patrick (Winnipeg, Man.) and Kelly Murray (Calgary) got the assists. For Murray, it was her second of three assists on the night.
 
Less than a minute later, just as the second offender from the previous 5-on-3 advantage stepped onto the ice, the T-Birds doubled the lead. Unrau scored her team leading 11th goal of the season blocker side on Hendricks at 1:08. Murray picked up her third assist of the night on the goal, while Mathea Fischer (Oslo, Norway) notched her second helper. 
 
The T-Birds opened the scoring early on Saturday night, lighting the lamp at 6:51 of the first period while on the power-play. Logan Boyd (Waterdown, Ont.) tallied for the seventh time this season, banging home a loose puck in front of the Huskie crease. 
 
Saskatchewan did answer back with a goal of their own late in the second period to head to the closing 20 minutes with things all knotted up at one. Kaitlin Willoughby scored her seventh goal of the season, a power-play marker, by finishing off a cross-ice pass from Lauren Zary at 18:34.
 
Saskatchewan outshot 34-18 in the game, with Samantha Langford (Pense, Sask.) picking up the win for the T-Birds. A physical affair, 15 minor penalties were handed out between the two teams. 
 
The Huskies travel to Manitoba to take on the Bisons next weekend, while UBC will head to Lethbridge.
