CALGARY – The UBC Thunderbirds got their first win of the 2015-16 Canada West women's hockey season, beating the Mount Royal Cougars 2-0 Friday night in Calgary.
Cailey Hay (Oakbank, Man.) and
Shiayli Toni (Saskatoon, Sask.) each scored their first of the season to lead the Thunderbirds to victory.
The Cougars came out flying in front of a raucous home crowd. MRU pushed the pace throughout the first five minutes, clearly thriving off the atmosphere at Flames Community Arenas.
Despite the jump in their step it was UBC who struck first. Off a Cougars turnover,
Logan Boyd (Waterdown, Ont.) slid the puck over to Hay who ripped it top corner at 7:21 of the opening period. UBC led 1-0 at the first intermission.
Mount Royal kept up the pace but
Samantha Langford (Pense, Sask.) stood tall in the Thunderbirds' goal.
Late in the second period, Toni buried a feed from Hay and
Rebecca Unrau (Humboldt, Sask.) to add insurance and seal the victory for UBC.
Langford made 22 saves for her first win of the season. Jess Ross made 16 of 18 saves on the night for Mount Royal.
The Thunderbirds improve to 1-2 while the Cougars fall to 0-3. The two sides will do it all over again tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. PT at Flames Community Arenas.
