VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey program is excited to announce its latest recruit for the 2014-15 season, defenceman Madison Patrick of Winnipeg.
Â
She joins the three other recruits in Logan Boyd, Celine Tardif and Kaylin Snodgrass who have already committed to playing for UBC next season.
Â
MADISON PATRICK (5'7" defence, Winnipeg, MB)
Â
Patrick comes to UBC from Winnipeg's St. Mary's Academy Flames AAA Prep Team program. She was the Flames' top scoring defenceman this past season with six goals and 13 assists in 36 games.
Â
At 5-foot-7, 140 pounds, Patrick plays a physical brand of hockey with 32 penalty minutes this season. She takes pride in her plus/minus, and moves the puck extremely well.Â
Â
Patrick spent three years with St. Mary's and was the squad's assistant captain for the past two.
Â
"Madison will bring our team strength and depth on the blue line. She has a tremendous work ethic and can be counted on to compete" said UBC head coach
Graham Thomas. "She is a strong, fast skater who moves the puck quickly and effectively. Madison takes pride in her team defense which is evidenced by her stats, commitment and dedication."
Â
Patrick comes from a rich athletic background. Her father Stephen played in the NHL as did her uncles, Richard Chernomaz and James Patrick, who now is an assistant coach of the Dallas Stars. Her mother Carrie played volleyball at the University of Winnipeg as well as with the Canadian national team and at one point was coached by current UBC bench boss
Doug Reimer.
Â
"Madison comes from an amazing athletic pedigree and we have confidence she will represent her family on and off the ice extremely well here at UBC," said Thomas. "Her personality, character and leadership aligns with our culture and we look forward to her joining the UBC hockey family this upcoming season."
Â
Patrick also represented Team Manitoba at the National Women's Under-18 Championship in Calgary this past fall. She will be graduating from St. Mary's Academy this June and is interested in studying Kinesiology at UBC in the fall of 2014.
Â
She will be suiting up for a UBC team that won 20 regular season games for the first time in program history during the 2013-14 Canada West campaign.
