VICTORIA – The University of British Columbia's rowing team wrapped up their performance at the 18th Canadian University Rowing Championship at Elk Lake today with the men claiming the national title. The women's side won two golds and two bronzes, while the men's finished with two golds, one silver, and two bronzes. In the team standings, the women took second overall.
The UBC Thunderbirds men's team edged the Vikes by four points in the team standings to win the national banner, while Brock took third. UBC finished with 106 points, UVic with 102 and Brock with 85. Defending champions Western Ontario finished fourth with 80 points.
UBC also swept the Coach of the Year Honours. Men's head coach

Craig Pond were each named Coach of the Year for their respective teams.
The men started their day with a silver finish in the men's lightweight double of
Angus Todd and
Aaron Lattimer (6:52.22).

Kevin Chung claimed the gold medal win racing in 6:28.29, edging out Brock's crew (6:29.23) and UVic (6:36.11).
The men's heavyweight single
Alex Janzen (7:43.68) also finished with a gold performance, beating both Trent (7:44.65) and McMaster (7:45.48) across the line.
Lightweight single
Callum MacKenzie (7:20.53) finished bronze just missing second place McGill (7:18.69).
In the final event of the day, the UBC men's eight of

Madeleine Chercover finished bronze with a time of 5:42.12. Hosts UVic (5:41.33) took gold while UBC was edged out by Brock (5:41.33) for the silver finish. Western settled for fourth in 5:43.52.
On the women's side, the UBC Thunderbirds finished second overall with 102 points. Unfortunately for the Birds', Western Ontario successfully defended their team title this weekend finishing with 117 points, while UVic took third with 93 points. For the second year in a row, the women's eight was awarded the Jane Thorton trophy.
Lightweight single rower
Janelle Mackoff received a bronze medal after racing with a time of 8:48.18. Mackoff was one second shy of Ottawa's silver finish (8:47.13).

Emmie Page finished in a time of 6:38.62 to win the women's eight event. Western (6:40.53) edged UVic (6:43.47) for the silver finish.
The lightweight women's double also earned a bronze finish as Mackoff and Sheppard raced in 7:50.72, following Western (7:32.12) and UVic (7:35.43).
Like UBC's eight, the women's pair of Fettig-Winn and Janssens defended their first place seeding going into the A finals by winning a gold medal (7:35.39) and edging out competitors UVic (7:36.59) and Western (7:38.19).
