VANCOUVER - Backstopped by
Danielle Lemon's sound performance in net, the Thunderbirds slipped away with a 2-1 shootout win over the University of Regina Cougars at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on Saturday night. With the win UBC improves to 16-3-1 on the season, their sixth win in a row.
Â
Turning away two of the three shooters she faced in the shootout to obtain UBC's victory, Lemon records her fourth win of the season. Throughout the game she provided a number of key saves, including a breakaway in the third period, and a grand total of 22 on the night.
"It was just nice to be able to back up my team, whatever role it is that I need to play at any time – I'll do what I've got to do," said
Danielle Lemon. " As a team when playoffs come, we're going to be a force to be reckoned with."
Â
Tatiana Rafter would tally the game-winning shootout goal, preceded by
Kathleen Cahoon's successful shot.
Â
The shootout came after the 10-minute period of overtime went scoreless, despite close chances from both sides. Regina goaltender Jennifer Schmidt also played a solid game, giving the T-Birds a hard time, making 33 saves.
Â
The Thunderbirds took a quick lead over the Cougars as
Melissa Goodwin slotted in the opener just over five minutes in, making for her third goal of the season. However, Regina's Brooklyn Moskowy answered a few short minutes later to even it up. After a fairly even-handed opening period, the affair would remain tied 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
Â
Throughout the second period UBC managed to hold a steady hand over Regina; however, the home team could not solve Cougar netminder Jennifer Schmidt despite having 11 shots. In net for the home team, Lemon denied all five shots fired her way. The game was stuck at 1-1 headed into the third frame.
Â
Following the ten-minute mark of the third, Lemon made a huge save on a breakaway to keep her team in the game by barring a grade 'A' chance for Regina. The Cougars would get a couple more on a 5-on-3 power play for 1:25, but Lemon along with the Thunderbird defenders were able to keep the game deadlocked at 1-1.
Â
With the loss Regina's record now stands at 10-7-3.
Â
Next weekend UBC heads to Alberta to challenge the Pandas who sit in third place in the Canada West conference.
