VANCOUVER – Four UBC rowers will represent Canada at the upcoming 2013 World Rowing U23 Championships in Linz, Austria. The group includes
Maxwell Lattimer,
Evan Cheng,
Robert Gage, and
Alex Janzen. All four were members of this year's Brown Cup Championship team.
The event runs Wednesday, July 24, 2013 through Sunday, July 28, 2013.
Lattimer and Cheng will be partnered in the lightweight men's pair boat. The tandem won the U23 and Senior A lightweight pairs races at this year's Rowing Canada spring trails. Last year they took part in the U23 World Championships helping Canada to a 9th place finish in the lightweight men's four.
Gage and Janzen will be rowing in the men's coxed four boat. Gage just finished his fourth year with the Thunderbirds and is a team captain along with Cheng and Lattimer. Janzen is coming off his first year with UBC and finished fourth overall in the open men's category at the C.R.A.S.H.-B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships.

"We're really excited for these athletes," said UBC men's rowing head coach
Mike Pearce. "They have been leaders within our program and it's great to see the work ethic these guys bring to our program paying off at the next level. It was 10 years ago when UBC put this many athletes through to the National Team. At that time it was a key step in a journey that ultimately led to Olympic gold in Beijing for Ben Rutledge and Kyle Hamilton and international success for many others. It will be great to see how they make out against the best in the world this summer in Linz and we're looking forward to the experience these guys will bring back to UBC in the fall."
