Winnipeg, MB -The crafty stickwork of captain
Christi Capozzi would be the difference, as she scored the shootout winner to give the UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team a 3-2 shootout victory over the Manitoba Bisons Friday night in Winnipeg. The victory extended the Birds' winning streak to an outstanding eight-games and improved their record to 10-2-1, while Bisons fall to 7-4-2 on the year.
Â
The Bisons took to the challenge in facing UBC, the top team in the Canada West, applying relentless pressure in the first frame. Goals by Rachele Bosc and Kyleigh Palmer put Manitoba up by 2-0 through 20 minutes of play.Â
Â
However, UBC would eventually dig themselves out of their two-goal deficit getting goals from
Nicole Saxvik in the second period and
Sarah Casorso early in the third period to tie the game at 2-2.
That is how the game would remain through 60 minutes of regulation. In overtime, the Thunderbirds dominated but were unable to come away with a goal. Â
In the shootout, the first five shooters were stopped before Capozzi scored to give the Thunderbirds the victory.Â
Danielle Dube picked up her seventh win of the season stopping 33 of 35 shots she faced, including all three shooters in the shootout. Dée-Ana Marion made 29 saves for Manitoba.Â
Â
Both teams were unable to capitalize on powerplay, each going 0-for-4.
Â
On Saturday the two teams will face off again at 4:00 pm PST in the second of a two-game series in Winnipeg.
