Regina, SK - Though the Thunderbirds were not shy to shoot, a combination of an outstanding performance by their opponent's goaltender and an emotionally charged lack of discipline would sink UBC to a 2-0 loss in Regina.
Â
The Cougars' netminder Jennifer Schmidt was a wall throughout, and it came as no surprise that she would be awarded first star of the game. Facing a resounding 41 shots, Schmidt would not let up and collected the shutout – extending her team's winning streak to five games.
Â
The 'Birds were trailing only by one after two periods, as Kirstin Boan tallied Regina's first goal in the opening frame. But in the third it still could have been anyone's game. A number of scrums in front of the Cougars' net made it look as if the 'Birds might grab an equalizing goal.
Â
However, after Regina's Brooklyn Moskowy netted her team's second goal at 11:59, UBC resorted to some uncharacteristically aggressive tactics which resulted a numerous trips to the penalty box.
Â
By the end of the game, the 'Birds had been dealt a total of 11 penalties, and seven of which they took in the third. Regina would, too, spend a significant sum of time in the box, landing 10 penalties.
Â
Out of desperation, UBC pulled goalie
Samantha Langford a number of times in the final minutes. Ultimately having an additional player on the ice could not counteract Schimdt's outstanding play, and the Thunderbirds would not recover from their two-goal deficit.
Â
The 'Birds were 0-for-8 on the powerplay, while the Cougars were 1-for-10.
Â
Goaltender
Samantha Langford made 32 saves for UBC.
Â
The Thunderbirds' conference record now stands at 2-2-1, while Regina is 5-0-0.
Â
The two teams face off again on Saturday, 5 p.m. PST, when UBC will seek to snap the Cougars' winning streak.
