Regina, Saskatchewan - The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey suffered their fifth loss of the season, falling 3-1 to the Regina Cougars Friday night in the Saskatchewan capital. The Cougars scored all three of their goals on the power play in a penalty filled affair.

The third meeting of the season between the Thunderbirds and Cougars proved to be a parade to the penalty box as each team was assessed nine minor penalites. Regina converted on three of their opportunities, while UBC failed to capitalize on any of their nine chances, which proved to be the difference in the game. Heading into this weekend's action the Cougars and Thunderbirds boasted the top two power plays in the Canada West.
Kylie Gavelin opened the scoring for Regina with just under six minutes remaining in the first period to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Laura Olsen scored what proved to be the game winning goal 1:34 into the second period, while Alexis Larson potted the insurance marker later in the frame.
Nikola Brown-John (Monte Lake, BC) scored her first goal of the season in the third period, but it was too little too late, as the Cougars held on for a 3-1 victory.
With the win Regina improves to 11-4-0 on the season, while the Thunderbirds fall to 7-5-3.
Final shots were 28-18 in favour of the Cougars.
Samantha Langford (Pense, SK), playing in her home province, got the start in goal for UBC and made 25 saves on the night. Toni Ross earned the win in net for Regina stopping 17 of the 18 UBC shots she faced.
Offense has come at a premium this year for the Thunderbirds, Friday night was the fifth time this season in which they have lost while only managing one goal.
These two teams will meet again tomorrow night in Regina. Puck drop is at 5:00 PM (PT). It will be the final regular season game of 2012 for UBC.
