VANCOUVER – A career-high 27-point performance by
Alex Vieweg (5th, North Vancouver, BC) was just enough to lead the No. 3 UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team to a 57-55 victory of the Thompson Rivers WolfPack in Kamloops on Saturday night.
UBC won its fourth straight regular season game by a score of 59-55 to improve to 8-2.
“In an ugly, scrappy affair that was laden with turnovers, our fifth-years, Zara (Huntley) and Alex (Vieweg) stepped up and got the job done,” said UBC head coach
Deb Huband. “It is nice to escape with the two wins and there are a lot of lessons to be taken from the game.”
Vieweg nailed a jumper with 30 seconds to go to put her team ahead 57-55. Two
Kristen Hughes (4th, North Vancouver, BC) free throws iced the game for the visitors.
The Thunderbirds held the lead for almost the entire game on Saturday, going up by 13 points late in the first half.
But TRU tied the game at 34 with 2:25 to go in the third quarter, and then again at 53 with a minute and a half left in regulation despite the Thunderbirds leading for nearly the entire fourth quarter.
The two teams traded buckets to set the stage for the elder Vieweg's heroics.
Vieweg's previous career high for points in a game came on Nov. 7, 2008 in Victoria, when she scored 25 points in a 74-70 UBC win.
Zara Huntley (5th, Halifax, NS) scored 16 points for UBC while
Kris Young (2nd, North Vancouver, BC) led the T-Birds with seven rebounds.
Kaitlyn Widsten recorded 15 points to lead TRU (5-7).
UBC shot 38.9 percent from the field, while the WolfPack 40 percent.
As Huband mentioned, there were lots of turnovers, with the two teams combining for 49 with 25 committed by UBC, one more than TRU.
UBC continues to lead the Canada West's Pacific Division. The team will travel east for games at Manitoba and Winnipeg next weekend.
Thompson Rivers will also head out on to the road, with games at Alberta and Saskatchewan in a week's time.
