SASKATOON - University of Saskatchewan forward Chelsey Sundby scored the game winner in a 3-2 victory over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds Friday night in Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.??
Tied 2-2 for 21 minutes of play, the Cougars pounced on a late opportunity when rookie Sundby finished a two-on-one that developed in the T-Birds zone. Kelsey Tulloch's precision cross-crease pass found Sundby's stick on the far side for a tap-in as UBC goaltender
Melinda Choy wasn't able to get across to make the save.
With the win, the Huskies move to 13-7-1, while UBC drops to 7-13-1. The Huskies hopes for a home playoff date remain intact. Saskatchewan needs to win all remaining games and hope that the University of Alberta Pandas finish the season without earning another point.??
UBC opened the scoring at 8:01 in the first period when
Kaylee Chanakos beat Huskie netminder Brianna Workman five hole. Teegan Heintz knotted the game with a power play marker at 17:26 of the first period.
Julie Paetsch put the Huskies ahead in the second frame when she deflected a Courtney Hillman shot from the point on the power play at 7:33. The T-Birds responded just over seven minutes later when an
Amanda Asay shot from the left wing tied the game with less than four minutes to play in the second period.
Choy was again outstanding between the pipes stopping 40 Huskie shots, while Workman made 18 saves for the Huskies at the other end of the ice.
The two teams will battle again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
