VANCOUVER – The No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team lost 78-75 in overtime to the host Calgary Dinos in Canada West regular season women's basketball action on Saturday night.
“It was a tough overtime loss to a determined Calgary team in an extremely physical game,” said UBC coach
Deb Huband. “We were not persistent in executing our game plan.”
Kris Young (2nd, North Vancouver, BC) set a career high with 31 points and also recorded eight rebounds and six assists.
Megan Lang led Calgary with 25 points.
The hometown Dinos built up a 76-69 lead with 2:14 left in overtime and then held on the rest of the way for the victory, despite four late points from
Kristen Hughes (4th, North Vancouver, BC).
A last gasp Hughes three-pointer to tie the game was off the mark.
Calgary avoided a repeat of the fourth quarter, where UBC trailed by eight points with 6:51 left before Young led a Thunderbird charge, scoring six points down the stretch to go with a big
Alex Vieweg (5th, North Vancouver, BC) three-pointer, to go ahead 67-65 with 39 seconds to go.
A Tamara Jarrett jump shot with 31 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime.
The first three quarters were just as exciting. After Calgary jumped out to an early 18-9 advantage, UBC chipped away at the deficit, eventually jumping ahead 30-28 in the second.
The two teams went back and forth, with Calgary holding the lead at halftime and UBC ahead by a point at the third quarter break.
By the final whistle, the 'Birds and Dinos had traded the lead 12 times and were tied on 13 separate occasions.
Young's 31 points were a spectacular way to end a signature individual weekend for the Handsworth graduate, who was a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line tonight.
“
Kris Young had another dominant performance but we needed a more consistent overall team effort,” said Huband.
UBC was outscored 18-3 in bench points on Saturday night. The team shot 40.3 percent from the field on Saturday but the Thunderbirds made just three of 17 shots from behind the three-point line.
UBC also outscored Calgary 27-15 in points off turnovers.
Leigh Stansfield also had a solid performance for UBC, scoring 16 points and grabbing eight rebounds.
Alex Vieweg had 11 points while
Zara Huntley chipped in with ten.
UBC goes into the winter holiday break with a record of 4-2. Calgary will finish the first part of the season with a mark of 6-2.
