VANCOUVER - The No. 9 Alberta Pandas scored three unanswered goals to record a 4-1 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West women's hockey action on Friday night in Vancouver.
Kaitlin Imai notched the Thunderbirds' only marker.
Sarah Hilworth got the third and fourth goals for Alberta after Katie Stewart opened the scoring for Alberta. The game-winning marker came from Monika Moskalski.
With the game tied at one and time running out in the second period, Alberta's Moskalski put the Pandas ahead for good with a goal at 18:58.
Then right at the end of the period,
Haley Voytechek was assessed a tripping penalty, and just 47 seconds into the third frame, Hilworth scored the first of her two goals to make it 3-1.
She added an empty-netter at the end of the game.
The first period was penalty-filled with each team taking three minors.
The Pandas' Stewart took advantage on her team's first power play, scoring at 6:36 of the first period.
Imai tied the game at 1 at 12:20 with her second goal of the 2011-12 season, with the assist going to
Tatiana Rafter.
UBC goaltender
Carly Butcher made 25 saves in the loss, while Alberta's Kaitlyn Chapman stopped 16 of 17 Thunderbirds' shots to record the victory.
UBC drops to 1-5-1 on the year, while Alberta improves to 3-1-5. The same two teams will faceoff again on Saturday at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
