VANCOUVER – In Regina on Friday night, the UBC Thunderbirds women's volleyball team opened defence of its Canadian Interuniversity Sport title by defeating the host Regina Cougars in straight sets.
The Thunderbirds won their 12 straight match, winning by set scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-17.
While the scores were relatively close, UBC never seemed in danger of losing the match, trailing just twice early in the first set.
"
We were very pleased with our overall execution on night one of league, especially against an experienced Regina team on their home court," said UBC head coach Doug Reimer. "Our sideout was at 70% which is very good at this time of the year. I thought we got sold play across the board and hope to duplicate that tomorrow."
Kyla Richey (5th, Roberts Creek, BC) led the Thunderbirds with ten kills, while
Lisa Barclay (2nd, Brandon. MB) added nine kills, while recording a hitting percentage of .421.
Shanice Marcelle (4th, Victoria, BC) recorded eight digs to lead UBC defensively.
UBC improves to 1-0 on the year, while the Cougars drop to 0-1.
The same two teams will play again on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Regina's Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.
