EDMONTON – The UBC Thunderbirds women's basketball team won an exciting 78-72 overtime decision over the Concordia Stingers at the 19th annual Pandas HoopFest tournament, hosted by the University of Alberta.
“I thought as the game was on the line towards the end of the game, we really cleaned up our execution and made some smart plays and finished tough,” said UBC head coach
Deb Huband.
UBC controlled the overtime period and outscored Concordia 11-5 to take the game.
In doing so, the Thunderbirds recovered from a deflating end to regulation. UBC was down nine points at the third quarter break but fought all the way back to take the lead with 2:40 to go in the fourth quarter.
A
Kris Young (2nd, North Vancouver, BC) basket with 51.4 seconds to go made it 67-64 for UBC, but Concordia's Magalie Beaulieu sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into extra time.
“They hit a banked three to send it into overtime but then I was happy we didn't let that deflate us and we came out and dominated in the extra five minutes,” said Huband. “We had a couple of great scores down the stretch by
Kris Young.”
UBC trailed 38-34 at the half.
Thunderbird
Alex Vieweg (5th, North Vancouver, BC) tied for the game-high by scoring 17 points, while teammates
Chloee St. Amour (3rd, Montreal, QC) and
Kristen Hughes (4th, North Vancouver, BC) added 16 points each.
“We were able to get a pretty good look at everybody, get everybody out on the floor,” commented Huband. “At times we looked sharp, and executed the way we wanted but we had a lot of moments when that wasn't happening for us.”
For Concordia, Natasha Raposo scored 17 points while Kaylah Barrett had 16.
UBC will play the University of Toronto in its next game at the HoopFest tournament. Tipoff is at 3:00 p.m.
