CALGARY - The UBC Thunderbirds (8-14-1) picked up a 1-0 shootout victory over the Calgary Dinos (5-14-2) on Friday night at the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
The win allowed the T-Birds to remain one-point behind the Regina Cougars (6-9-6) for the final playoff spot in the Canada West. The T-Birds are still going to need help as they have just one game remaining in their season while the Cougars have three, including another contest against the last place Lethbridge Pronghorns (4-13-4) on Saturday.
Melinda Choy was named the game's first star on Friday as the UBC netminder stopped all 26 Dino shots and three of four shooters in the shootout.
The Dinos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the shootout when Rebecca Niehaus beat Choy on Calgary's first attempt with a right to left deke. T-Bird rookie
Rayna Cruickshank drew the shootout level in the third round, solving Calgary goalie Katie Urness by sliding the puck five-hole. Fifth-year
Jenny Mahovlich put UBC ahead for good on the T-Birds next effort with a deke.
Urness made 21 saves in the loss.
The two teams meet again on Saturday night in Calgary. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 PM PST.
