CALGARY - Hayley Wickenheiser scored three goals and added one assist in the Calgary Dinos 6-0 win over the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday night to earn her school a weekend series split.
Wickenheiser tallied twice in the first period and then again with a solo effort in the third as she improved her league leading point total to 15 (six goals, nine assists) through six games. She also assisted on Chelsea Peterson's third period power play goal. Elana Lovell and Maddison Gee scored 79 seconds apart midway through the second to round out the scoring.
UBC (2-2-0) was held off the scoresheet by Calgary netminder Amanda Tapp who made 11 saves in the win.
T-Bird netminder
Melinda Choy, who made 39 saves in UBC's 3-2 win over Calgary on Friday, allowed five goals on 25 shots before being replaced early in the third period by freshman
Hillary Talbot due to a nagging injury she picked up earlier in the game. Talbot made 11 saves, conceding only the one marker to Wickenheiser, in just over 19 minutes of action.
"We just weren't in the game from the very start. It's similar to last weekend when we played well on Friday but then not very well on Saturday. You can't afford to take a night off and this is a lesson that needs to learned quickly," said UBC head coach Nancy Wilson.
Wilson's assessment was a mixture of praise for the Dinos (4-2-0) and a list of things to work on for her team.
"I'll give credit to Calgary tonight. They really stepped up their game and Wickenheiser led by example for them," said Wilson. "We weren't able to put the same pressure on their defence as last night and stepped back, allowing them to come at us."
The T-Birds play their first home games of the season next weekend, welcoming the Regina Cougars to the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night.
