REGINA – The No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds improved their conference record to 11-0 on Saturday night after defeating the Regina Cougars in Canada West women's volleyball at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The T-Birds opened the match with a 25-19 win in the first set, but Regina came right back with a 25-14 win in the second. The 'Birds won 25-18 in the third set, then clinched the match with a hard fought 28-26 win in a marathon fourth set.
"We survived the second night here in Regina. Played a strong third and fourth set after getting shelled in the second set," said UBC head coach coach
Doug Reimer. "I thought Shanice had a very strong game both offensively and defensively. We also showed a lot of toughness as a team playing well in the fourth set whne both teams were going back and forth with side outs."
Liz Cordonier and
Shanice Marcelle both had 14 kills to lead the Thunderbirds. Marcelle added 12 digs for a second straight double-double and also had a team-high .353 hitting percentage. Fourth-year libero
Claire Hanna led the T-Birds with 13 digs, while
Kyla Richey had 11 kills and 11 digs for the double-double.
Meagan Onstad led the Cougars with 13 kills and added 14 digs to record the team's lone double-double. Beth Clark had ten kills and four blocks, while Rebecca Rink had 12 digs.
Ranked No. 4 in the CIS, the Cougars fall to 6-4 on the season with the loss. UBC will look to remain perfect when they head to Brandon for two road matches next weekend, while the Cougars travel to Langley, B.C. for a pair of matches against Trinity Western.
