REGINA - The University of Regina's women's hockey team completed a two-game sweep in a critical weekend series with a 3-2 win on Saturday night over the UBC Thunderbirds at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.
The Thunderbirds opened the scoring early in the second, as
Chelsea Laing scored the first of her two goals less than three minutes into the opening frame. Rianne Wight responded for the Cougars, scoring her fourth of the year to tie the game at one apiece just past the 12-minute mark of the first.
The score stayed tied at one until midway through the second, when Laing scored again for the 'Birds to give the visitors the lead. Kelsie Graham scored at the 18-minute mark of the second to tie the game at two with her second goal in as many games, and Paige Wheeler scored what would turn out to be the game winner just over a minute later.
"Again we thought we played well enough to win but we just couldn't finish. That has been the story for us so far this year and although we are disappointed with the loss, we can take some good things away from this game," noted UBC head coach Nancy Wilson.
Lisa Urban was called upon to make 19 saves for the Cougars in the win. T-Bird goalie
Melinda Choy allowed three goals on 27 shots, while
Kaylee Chanakos and
Kaitlin Imai assisted on both of Laing's goals for Thunderbirds.
The win improves Regina's record to 5-5-4 as the Cougars pull three points clear of the Thunderbirds (5-8-1) for fourth place in the Canada West standings.
UBC hosts the Alberta Pandas next weekend, while the Cougars will hit the road for a two-game weekend series against Calgary.
