The No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds completed a two-game sweep of the
University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-18)
Saturday at the PAC in Saskatoon.
With the win the Thunderbirds remain undefeated at 6-0, while the
Huskies remain winless at 0-6.
Fourth-year middle blocker
Jen Hinze led the T-Birds with eight kills.
Outside hitters
Liz Cordonier,
Shanice Marcelle and
Kyla Richey all
finished the night with six kills. Cordonier had a strong defensive gave adding 10 digs.
UBC jumped out to a three point lead after going point-for-
point until 6-5. Two kills by middle-blocker
Nicky Osborne and another by Richey put the T-Birds ahead. They continued to extend their lead throughout the set increasing it to six at 15-9. The Birds then shut the door on the Huskies ahead of a Marcelle kill that sealed the first set at 25-17.
The second set followed the same script with the T-Birds jumping out to an early five point lead at 9-4. The Huskies were able to crawl back to within three points but as soon as UBC got the ball back they took command of the set. Cordonier and Osborne led the charge. Osborne had two successful attacks, while Cordonier had two service aces to move the 'Birds to 16-9 lead at the second break. A lead that UBC hold taking the set 25-18.
The third set saw much of the same with the T-Birds taking immediate control quickly outscoring the Huskies 14-5. Saskatchewan was able to get back into the set pulling to 14-9. As soon as the Huskies showed a glimpse of life, the 'Birds regained the advantage on the increasing their lead to 18-10 then cruising to take the third set 25-18.
The Thunderbirds will look to remain perfect when they return home to host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack November 20th and 21st at War Memorial Gym.
