Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

T-Birds give Bisons fright but lose in shootout

WINNIPEG – On a spooky night on Halloween, the No. 4-ranked Manitoba Bisons women's hockey team almost received a scare from the UBC Thunderbirds before rallying for a come-from-behind 2-1 shootout win on Saturday, October 31 at the Max Bell Arena (U of M campus).

With the victory, the Bisons moved their record to 4-2-0 for eight points and into third place in the Canada West standings. For UBC, they earn a point and are now 1-4-1 on the season.

"We played a phenomenal game and we finally put together three solid periods of hockey," said UBC head coach Nancy Wilson. "The pressure we put on Manitoba tonight with our forecheck was great and led to many good chances.  Our team showed everything we have been working on and put it together for three periods."

UBC jumped to their first lead in the weekend series as they capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity with only 34 seconds left in the first period. Kirsten Mihalcheon fired a rebound over Bisons goalie Stacey Corfield after she made the first save on Jenny Mahovlich. Lisa Bonang added the other assist.

In the second, there was no scoring but several chances for both teams with the goalies coming up big especially UBC netminder Melinda Choy as she turned aside 10 shots in the middle frame.

Manitoba notched the equalizer when they forced a 5-on-3 on UBC and Tammy Brade took a beautiful slot pass by Addie Miles and scored her third of the 2009 campaign.

Both goalies were perfect through the rest of regulation and overtime, sending the game to a shootout.

Corfield was perfect in the one on one battles to help the Bisons grab the 2-1 win as she stopped all four shooters she faced with the Bisons notching a pair of goals.

UBC was 1-6 on the power play while Manitoba was 1-9 with the man advantage. Choy had 30 saves while Corfield earned her fourth win of the season with 20 saves.

The T-Birds travel to play the No. 3-ranked Alberta Pandas (8-0-0) at 6 p.m. PT on November 6-7 at Clare Drake Arena.
