Sean Shook is in his third year as an assistant with the UBC men’s basketball program.
The 2019-2020 season saw the Thunderbirds crowned Canada West champions and earn the bronze medal at the U SPORTS Final 8.
In 2018-2019, Shook’s debut season with the Thunderbirds was a successful one as UBC went 17-3 in Canada West play, finished second in the league playoffs, and placed fifth at the U SPORTS Final 8.
Shook joined head coach Kevin Hanson’s staff in 2018 after two years as the full-time assistant with Simon Fraser.
Shook has spent a lifetime in the game and has been in the coaching profession for over 20 years. Before his stint at SFU, Shook displayed his impressive versatility in a dual role as both athletic director and head coach at Squamish’s Quest University. In his eight years guiding the Kermodes, he built the program into a perennial power in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.
Shook’s rich history in the game isn’t limited to just the Lower Mainland as the dual citizen who was born in Ferndale, Wash., made an impact as a player and coach just across the border as well. Prior to starting the program at Quest, Shook spent four seasons as the Meridian High Trojans’ head coach with district appearances in his last three seasons and a state tournament berth in 2003.
In his formative years, Shook played basketball at Ferndale High School where he was an all-league player and continued his career at Yakima Valley College (Yakima, Wash.). He was also a three-year letter winner for the Golden Eagles baseball program, earning his Bachelor’s Degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham.
Shook has been involved in the Basketball BC Provincial Team Program for many years and has also spent time working with Basketball BC’s Regional Training Centres.
