A Thunderbird player and now coach, Sammie Starr has been on the UBC Baseball coaching staff since 2015 and serves as a full-time assistant.
Born and raised in Toronto, he joined the UBC baseball program as a player in 2007. As a Thunderbird, Sammie was a four-year starter through 2010. During his tenure as a T-Bird, Starr received multiple accolades for his play. He was recognized as a top defender at shortstop in the NAIA West by receiving Gold Glove Awards in back-to-back seasons (2009 and 2010), along with All-NAIA West Team honours in 2010. Starr represented Canada at the World University Baseball Championship in the Czech Republic (2008), and at the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George (2009).
Following his university career, Starr was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft. He played at every minor league level, making his way to AAA in 2012. After a five-year playing career, Starr made the transition to coaching. He spent time coaching in the Baltimore Orioles' minor league system at the Rookie and Single A levels as a third base coach and infield instructor before coming to UBC.
