CALGARY – The UBC Thunderbirds (2-0) finished off their season-opening weekend with a 2-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos (0-4) at Hawkings Field on Sunday.

Sukhman Hundal and Mackenna Brown delivered on offence for the T-Birds, each scoring in the first and second half, respectively.

In the blue-and-gold goal was a pair of keepers splitting the duties, with both standing tall to keep the clean sheet intact all throughout. First-year Kaelen Uy, who was seeing action in her second straight game, earned the start before fourth-year vet Robyn Goh finished the job in relief.



Uy was tested early in this one as the Dinos came flying out of the gates. Calgary was dominating possession throughout the first quarter but, highlighted by a remarkable toe save in the final two minutes by Uy, the Dinos couldn't manage to break through.

In the second quarter, after potting her first career tally to close out yesterday's win, Hundal opened the scoring in a similar fashion today. As halftime approached, the second-year defender once again converted on a penalty corner to hand her side the lead in the 26th minute.

As Calgary tried to inch their way back to an even score in the third, Mackenna Brown gave the 'Birds some breathing room. Just as it seemed as though the quarter would remain scoreless, the first-year midfielder found the back of the net in the 43rd minute after finishing off a hectic scramble in the circle with a goal to extend her team's lead heading into the final frame.

Physicality picked up as the game wore on, leading to five cards being pulled for a combined three players. UBC's Shannon Stelling picked up two green cards and a yellow, while Calgary's Maia McGillivray and Elliot Kellough were each shown a green card of their own.



The Dinos pulled their keeper, second-year Madison Forest, with a few minutes remaining in the fourth as the home side searched for a goal, but the 2-0 score held and the T-Birds secured their second straight win.

The Thunderbirds' journey on the road continues next week as they make their way to the Island, clashing with provincial rival, the University of Victoria Vikes in a two-game set. Action begins on Saturday, September 26, at 11:00 a.m.
