VANCOUVER – In the final contest of the regular season, the UBC Thunderbirds took to the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre to face off against their provincial rival, the University of Victoria Vikes and fell 34-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Coming out of the gates, the Vikes were firing on all cylinders and wasted little time to get on the scoreboard. Led by a trio of tries from Ivy Poetker, Piper Walsh and Krissy Scurfield, Victoria snagged a 17-0 lead just past the 20-minute mark.
From there, they continued to press and added another pair of scores from Larah Wright and Maggie MacKinnon to inflate their lead to 29-0 heading into the break.
After the half, the T-Birds were eager to respond. They applied pressure in the early going and controlled possession in and around the final third for the first 15 minutes. They slowly gained ground throughout the half, but struggles with handling errors blocked their way from getting over the final stretch for a score.
Just as it seemed the T-Birds were about to make some noise, the Vikes fought back with another try from Remee Brown to put a bow on the commanding 34-0 win – handing the 'Birds their first shutout in 15 years.
With the loss, UVic now holds the top spot in the conference heading into postseason. The Canada West playoff begins on Thursday, October 22, and runs through Sunday, October 25, in Victoria. For the Thunderbirds, they will match up against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in opening day action.
