KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds relied on another dominant performance from
Olivia Weekes along with a combination of late game stingy defense and clutch shooting to top the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 72-66 Saturday night at the Tournament Capital Centre.
Weekes led the way with a game high 18 points and 17 rebounds to record her fifth double-double in the last six games, helping UBC to a fifth straight victory while improving to 10-4 on the Canada West campaign. The visitors also enjoyed balanced support scoring with nearly five players reaching double-digits as the 'Birds also benefited with 28 points from their bench compared to two from TRU.
Cassie Joli-Coeur contributed 14 points,
Sara Toneguzzi added 11 while
Stella LaGrange and
Brooke Wagner chipped in with nine points each. LaGrange stepped up to hit two key three-pointers in the final minutes to secure the win for UBC and also grabbed seven rebounds in the tilt.
The Wolfpack were led by Kylee Koppes' 17 points, Olena Vasylenko's 16 points and Morgan Eichenberger's 15 points and seven rebounds as they fell to 6-10 on the season.
It was an entertaining and very close encounter throughout with no more than four points separating the teams at the conclusion of the first three-quarters, the hosts led 20-17 after the first frame before UBC edged ahead by scores of 39-35 at the end of two and 55-53 following the third stanza.
The T-Birds, would show some good determination and habits to close it out on their terms in the fourth quarter limiting the Wolfpack to just 13 points and continuing to be dominant in the paint at both ends as they out-rebounded TRU 40-21 overall. It was Weekes who set the tone for the visitors but fourth-year guard LaGrange who delivered the final daggers with a pair of clutch three-pointers late. The first with three-minutes remaining to put UBC ahead 66-62 and once again hitting from outside with just 11 seconds left to play to make it a two-score game and seal the 72-66 victory.
The T-Birds will remain on the road albeit a little closer to home entering week three of the new year, visiting the University of Fraser Valley Cascades for a weekend series beginning with a unique early tip off at 11:00 a.m. Friday January, 23.
