CALGARY – After recording a 5-0 win to start the season the previous day, the T-Birds decided to run it back and again put five past the Dinos to leave Alberta with an ideal opening weekend.
UBC showed some set play proficiency on the day, as three of their five tallies came from penalty corners. That ability to make opponents pay for making mistakes is a good trait to have, and it started with stalwart defender
Birkley Anderson making an impact on the other side of the pitch with a goal in the 14th minute.
Shannon Stelling notched the second of the game and her second of the season in the 25th, off another penalty corner. That was the score at the halftime break, but it only took until two minutes into the third quarter for
Kaia Cooper to add a third for her team. The fifth-year forward slotted the ball past Dinos' keeper Madison Forest for her first of the year.
Fellow veterans
Thora Rae and
Kenzie Girgis added the insurance markers in the final quarter of action, as the goalkeeper tandem of
Pascale Pottier and
Robyn Goh each recorded 30 minutes of work in the shared shutout.
The T-Birds will now get a weekend off before returning to action in a critical series against the defending champion Victoria Vikes. That pair of games – also UBC's first ones at home this season – happen on Saturday, September 20th, and Sunday, September 21st, at Wright Field.
