'Birds start season strong with decisive 5-0 win over Dinos

CALGARY – Five different players found the back of the net for the UBC Thunderbirds (1-0) at they took down the Calgary Dinos (0-1) 5-0 on Saturday in both teams' Canada West season opener.

It took until the 14th minute of the game at Hawkings Field for the Thunderbirds to make the first mark on the pitch and set the tone. 17 year-old midfielder Laurien Bruijning took a chance at the Dinos' defense and was rewarded with the first goal of the Canada West season, in her very first game as a T-Bird.

The second quarter was where the blue and gold really took control, with reigining conference Player of the Year Sydney Le notching a goal in the 23rd minute, before returning senior Thora Rae scored two minutes later to bring them up to a 3-0 lead.

The T-Birds brought that same energy into the third quarter when Mikayla Stelling started off strong with a drive through the shooting circle before tallying UBC's fourth goal from a penalty corner in the 33rd minute. Her sister Shannon Stelling put the cherry on top of a dominant performance by netting the 'Birds' fifth goal in the 59th minute.

Regardless of the deficit, the Dinos continued to hold strong defensively and work hard offensively. They generated a few solid chances throughout the second half, but could not beat T-Birds goalkeeper Pascale Pottier, who earned a shutout in her first career start.

The two teams will tango again on Sunday, with the ball set to drop at 10:00 a.m. (PT) back at Hawkings Field.
