Thunderbirds take game one over Argonauts

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The UBC Thunderbirds (14-16, 9-11) snapped their skid with a blowout road victory over the Providence Argonauts (8-24, 4-18). The two teams were only able to play one game on the day, but the T-Birds made their unexpectedly limited opportunities count as they scored nine runs in six innings.

Kaitlyn Eng, Kennedy Laird and Shae Sever all recorded a pair of RBI, while Keona Nordquist scored three runs off of three hits. Sever was also dialed in on the mound, tossing a complete game shutout. The fourth-year pitcher allowed just three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts.

The Thunderbirds scored their first run on just their third at-bat of the game, as the top of the order executed their roles perfectly. After Nordquist hit a leadoff double, Eng laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring her to third. Up stepped Sever who promptly smacked a single straight up the middle, making it 1-0 for the road team.

That was the only scoring play until the fourth inning, with Sever bringing the heat with her pitches in the early going. She struck out six of the first 10 batters she faced, not letting the Argos get any momentum.

The UBC offence began to heat up as well in the fourth, scoring eight runs over the following three innings. The middle of the UBC order scored a run in the fourth the exact same way as their teammates did in the first, with a Marin Jorgenson leadoff double, Laird sacrifice bunt and Jessica Heutink single combining to double the lead.

Jorgenson and Laird then both hit RBI singles the following frame, after Nordquist had crossed home plate for the second time on the day on an Eng groundout. Eng and Sever added another pair of RBI singles in the top of the sixth, before Eng then scored on a throwing error.

Really, the only thing that could cool off the T-Birds on the day was the weather, as snow started to fall in the fifth inning. While the two sides were able to finish the first half of the planned doubleheader, the second half had to be abandoned with how quickly the snow was coming down.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. (PT) tomorrow to finish off their series against the Argos.
