T-Birds down Argonauts in Friday doubleheader to secure series sweep

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The UBC Thunderbirds (16-16, 11-11) completed the three-game sweep over the Providence Argonauts (8-26, 4-20) after outscoring the hosts 22-2 over the course of their Good Friday double-header.

After a convincing 9-0 victory to open the series on Thursday the T-Birds offence remained potent in game one on day two with UBC's Shae Sever registering a two-run home run to right field in the top of the first inning. The 'Birds continued their momentum scoring six runs in the second helped by right fielder, Brielle Donaghue's two-run single to open up a comfortable 9-0 lead after just two innings of play. The Thunderbirds added one apiece in the third and fourth, followed by a three-run home run from Kennedy Kim in the fifth stanza to go ahead 14-0 heading into the bottom half.

The Argos would answer with a two-run double from Tehneson Ehnes before eventually falling 14-2. Ehnes, the only Argos player to touch up UBC starter Carleen Murray (6-7) who was dominant on the day in going the distance, allowing four hits and two runs while tallying three strikeouts.

In game two the T-Birds scored three runs in the top of the first behind RBI singles from Kim, Jessica Heutnik and Kennedy Laird, starting strong with a 3-0 early advantage. Sever would help the cause yet again in blasting a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning to go up 5-0 after two while scoring three more runs the rest of the way to secure an 8-0 win and the series sweep.

Riley Woodward started the game for the 'Birds and after an uneventful two-innings gave way to Sever who'd earn a 10th win on the campaign (10-7) on the strength of three innings pitched, allowing just three hits, no runs while striking out four UP batters.
