T-Birds continue to soar on day one of second tournament

VICTORIA – University of Victoria's Wallace Field welcomed six teams from around Canada West for the second stop of the Rugby 7s series on March 1st.

UBC jumped out to a 3-0 start after day one for the second-straight tournament, followed by Victoria, Lethbridge, and Trinity Western each posting 2-1 marks on the first day of action.

"I thought our game today was awesome, we talked about playing as a team," noted Thunderbirds head coach Darcy Patterson on her squad's performance. "It was great to see the teams come at it with intensity. It's always great competition."

The Thunderbirds' Skye Farish and Trinity Western's Ava Van Santen led the day's try-scoring efforts, each tallying four. Both recorded a hat trick in a match, with Farish scoring three against Calgary while Van Santen notched three tries against Alberta. The Pronghorns' Kayleigh Noel led all players in converts scored on day one with five, all coming against the Pandas.

UBC continued its undefeated streak to begin this year's Rugby 7s season, opening with a 40-5 win over Lethbridge followed by a 34-7 victory over Trinity Western. The 'Birds handed hosts Victoria their lone loss of the day, securing a 17-5 win in the final match of day one.

Elsewhere, Lethbridge recorded its first wins of the 2025 season. After defeating Alberta 35-19 to claim their first win of the year, a back-and-forth contest with Calgary ended in favour of the Pronghorns on a try from Sydney McDonald as time expired to give her team a 15-14 victory.

Trinity Western continued its strong season on day one, using tries from Van Santen and Danika Dool to claim a 10-5 win over Lethbridge, and had five different players register points in a 35-7 win over Alberta. The Spartans' lone loss of the day came to the host Vikes, 36-12.

All teams will cap off group play tomorrow, with Dinos and Spartans opening the second day of action at 11:00 a.m. PT. The final set of games will begin at 1:45 p.m. PT at Wallace Field.
