Balanced 'Birds take down Timberwolves

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - Friday night at Brownridge Court, the UBC Thunderbirds (18-2) won their final game of the 2024-25 regular season by a 79-53 score over the UNBC Timberwolves (4-16).

Keira Daly and Olivia Weekes each finished with 13 points for the T-Birds while Daly also finished as their top rebounder with seven.

On the other side Sveta Boykova, one of the four soon-to-be graduate players from the UNBC Women's Basketball team racked up a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way for the hosts. Viktoriia Filatova was next with 12. Saturday's game marked the final game in the careers of Boykova, Sarah Kuklisin, Bella Mesquita and Adaiah Tupas-Singh.

UBC held a slim 14-12 lead after one, despite trailing for a majority of the quarter. UNBC led for nearly five full minutes thanks to some well-rounded scoring. Amrit Manak, Viktoriia Filatova, Sveta Boykova, Sarah Kuklisin and Brynn Dergousoff all had points in the first for the hosts. UBC countered with six from Mona Berlitz and four from Olivia Weekes. The top rebounder in the opening quarter was Boykova with five.

UBC pushed their lead to 10 thanks to a 22-14 edge in the second quarter. Berlitz tacked on five more and led all scorers at the half with 11. Keira Daly, who was held pointless in the first quarter, chimed in with four.

For UNBC it was the Russian duo of Boykova and Filatova that did the heavy lifting. Boykova connected on three field-goals in the second and had a team-high nine points through 20. Boykova also had a game-leading eight rebounds at the halfway mark. Not to be outdone was Viktoriia Filatova who notched five points, giving her seven through two.

The halftime score was 36-26 for UBC.

In the third, UBC outscored UNBC 16-13. Sara Toneguzzi poured in four while Emily Martindale and Cerys Merton each registered three. Boykova officially arrived at double-double status in the third when she scored four more points and pulling down three rebounds.

The Thunderbirds outscored UNBC 27-14 in the final quarter and were full marks on their way to a 79-53 victory. The top performer in the fourth for UBC was Keira Daly who scored seven.
