VANCOUVER – After a slow start, the University of Victoria (3-2) would catch fire from beyond the arc in the second quarter and never look back, hitting 13 three pointers as they took down the No. 4 nationally ranked UBC Thunderbirds (4-1) by a score of 66-53.
Rookie Avery Geddes led the way for the Vikes, scoring 24 points and shooting 6 of 8 from beyond the three-point line. Mimi Segue controlled the glass, collecting 17 rebounds (10 offensive) and contributed 9 points. Natalie Allison and Eden Henderson connected on 3 three pointers apiece.
Olivia Weekes scored 21 points for a struggling UBC offence, while defensively the Thunderbirds were led by
Stella LaGrange and
Cerys Merton who had 7 and 6 steals in the game respectively.
"I think there was three-keys to the result tonight," said UBC head coach
Dave Taylor. "Obviously them going 13 for 23 and us going three for 26 from the three-point line, that's a difference of 30 points from the three-point line which is pretty big. They also really beat us up on the glass, they had 16 offensive rebounds we had 14 defensive rebounds and that can't happen. Lastly, I think we didn't do a good job coming out of halftime, they put a big run on us in that third-quarter, 20 to eight so normally I would have said if we were outshooting them 67 to 52 we'd only turned it over 15 times and we're getting to the line more than them, all of that would have been good but it wasn't enough to outdo those other three things."
Following a 6-0 run to start the game,
Sara Toneguzzi would get UBC on the board off a pass from
Cassie Joli-Coeur. With just over 3 minutes left in the quarter, Weekes would grab UBC's 6th offensive rebound of the quarter and make the put back to start a UBC a 8-0 and build a 14-8 lead. Victoria would close the gap and a post up basket by Abigail Becker would tie the game at 16 to end the first quarter.
After a slow start to the quarter for both teams, a
Maddy Billings three-point shot would put UBC 22-21. The Vikes would respond with a 8-0 run and build up their lead, with rookies Geddes and Henderson connecting multiple times from downtown. Victoria would go into the half leading 35-26.
Victoria would stay hot from beyond the arc, knocking down 4 of 5 threes in the quarter, and shooting 70% from the field for the quarter. UBC's offensive struggles would continue with Weekes finally scoring their first FG of the quarter with 1:07 left.
Geddes would hit yet another three pointer to start the quarter. Weekes would awaken the UBC offensive in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of UBC's 19 points, but it was too late to catch the Vikes who would leave War Memorial Gym with a 66-53 victory.
