T-Birds fall to Huskies in first of weekend road series

SASKATOON, Sask. — Gage Grassick led all scorers with 27 points and Logan Reider followed with 22 as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies downed the visiting UBC Thunderbirds 80–51 on Friday night (Nov. 21) on Ron and Jane Graham Centre Court inside the Physical Activity Complex.

Grassick and Reider, who now sit second and third in Canada West scoring, did much of their damage from beyond the arc as the veteran guards combined to shoot 9-for-16 from three-point range. Maya Flindall and Ella Murphy Wiebe chipped in with efficient performances of their own, both shooting above 50% from the floor and netting 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The result maintains Saskatchewan's perfect record in 2025, improving the Huskies to 7–0 as they keep pace with a top-heavy Canada West Prairie Division. Saskatchewan, Alberta, Calgary, and Regina all remain unbeaten so far this season, sharing a four-way tie atop the division.

For UBC, the loss is just their second of the season as the T-Birds fall to 5–2 and now sit second in the Pacific Division behind only Trinity Western, who hold a 7–2 record.

In the opening quarter, Reider, Flindall, and Grassick carried the offensive load for Saskatchewan, with the trio scoring 15 of the Huskies' 17 points in the frame. Conversely, UBC spread the ball around and leaned on its defence to keep pace with the Dogs. No T-Bird scored more than four points, but the visitors' active hands forced 10 Huskie turnovers in the opening 10 minutes, allowing them to close out the first quarter tied 17–17.

In the second, Grassick found her rhythm, scoring 11 in the frame while the Huskies tightened up defensively. The Thunderbirds tried to stay within reach through aggressive interior play, second-chance points, and trips to the free-throw line, but Reider and Grassick continued to pour it in—combining for 29 of Saskatchewan's 36 first-half points. The Huskies took a 36–26 lead into the break, buoyed by improved defensive pressure and by holding the T-Birds to 2-of-15 from the field and 0-for-6 from three-point range.

Coming off a career-high 30-point outing, UBC guard Olivia Weekes attempted to mount a comeback early in the third, netting seven of the T-Birds' first nine points of the half. Still, the Huskies steadily widened the gap through dominant defensive rebounding and 10 points off turnovers, entering the fourth up 55–43. Weekes would finish as UBC's top scorer with 13 points while Cassie Joli-Coeur and Kiarra Kelly added six points each for the visitors.

In the final frame, Saskatchewan put the game out of reach. Grassick caught fire from deep, draining three triples in the quarter, while Reider added two of her own. The Huskies' defence clamped down, holding the Thunderbirds to just eight points in the fourth en route to a 29-point victory.

The Dogs and T-Birds will rest and reload for game two of their weekend series Saturday night (Nov. 22) at the PAC, with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m. PT.
