VANCOUVER – On the heels of Team Canada's impressive showing at the recent Women's Rugby World Cup, UBC is looking forward to keeping one of the fastest growing team sports in the world front of mind in the Lower Mainland as they get set to host the 2025 CGIS U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship Presented by Rec Room from October 29 to November 2 at Thunderbird Stadium.
The defending national champion Thunderbirds boasted current and former student-athletes in the World Cup Final match, five of whom suited up for Canada while one dressed for England's title winning squad. The T-Birds who represented Team Canada included current players
Florence Symonds and
Rachel Smith along with UBC alumnae Shoshanah Seumanutafa, Mikiela Nelson and Gillian Boag, while the lone former member of the blue and gold who represented England was Mackenzie Carson. Carson and her mates on England's world No. 1 ranked squad defeated No. 2 ranked Canada 33-13 in the Championship final on home soil in front of 82,000 passionate spectators at a sold-out Twickenham Stadium in London. A new record crowd for a women's rugby match and a Rugby World Cup match.
Above and beyond the final result was the overwhelming win in terms of buzz and attention generated world-wide for the sport and tournament, proving the rise of women's rugby is one of the most compelling growth stories in the global sports landscape.
Closer to home, Day Passes for the 2025 U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship featuring the best university women's rugby squads from across the country are now available, providing access to all matches on any given day.
