KAMLOOPS, B.C. –
Chris Lee scored the only goal of the night in the third minute of stoppage time to secure a 1-0 UBC Thunderbirds road win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack Friday night.
Facing the prospect of a scoreless draw,
Luke Norman got the ball over to Lee at the top of the box, the third year defender's left foot strike bouncing right of TRU goalkeeper Olivier Jumeau and into the net for his third tally of the season, snatching an additional two points to keep the T-Birds (6-0-2) atop the Pacific division standings.
Bennett McKay secured his second consecutive clean sheet despite never being officially tested by the WolfPack (1-7-1) who dropped their second straight contest.
"Credit to the guys for persevering right to the end, sometimes that's what it takes," said UBC head coach,
Mike Mosher following the victory at Hillside Stadium. "On the balance of things, I think we deserve the three points as we created enough. But certainly credit (TRU) for their defending and making it difficult, they defended the central areas of the field well."
Through the opening 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless despite both teams creating quality chances.
UBC's best effort came in the 21
st when
Joven Mann unleashed a low, powerful shot from just outside the box that Jumeau did well to steer around the post, one of his six saves on the night.
TRU's best chance of the match came off the head of Jonathan Rinaldi in the 25
th minute. Mikkel Rosenlund whipped in a ball perfectly onto Rinaldi's head, but his leaping effort was powered just wide.
Jumeau kept the hosts in the match from the re-start and came up massively in the 69
th minute.
Marcus Puhalj played a ball to
Max Comsia who was able to flick it into the path of an onrushing Norman who's effort from within the 18-yard box was denied by the WolfPack keeper.
Jumeau came up big again in the 75
th, denying
Henri Godbout from the edge of the box.
Lee's game winner provided the T-Birds with a third straight win while UBC remains the lone undefeated team in the conference now past the halfway point of the regular season.
The 'Birds continue their Interior road trip Saturday with a visit to the UBC Okanagan Heat (2-5-3) in Kelowna. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with the game available live on
Canada West TV.
