T-Birds earn third straight shutout in road win

It was a successful road outing for the UBC Thunderbirds, who took down their neighbours over at UBC Okanagan by a score of 2-0. The T-Birds backline continued their strong run of form, recording a third straight shutout after not getting one across the first five games.

The 'Birds struck less than five minutes in, off a free kick from about 25 yards out. Brennen Fuerst swung in a great cross that found the head of Luke Norman, who flicked it up and out of the reach of the sprawling Heat goalkeeper.

Norman was again involved in the second goal, which featured some wonderful interplay inside the box. Receiving the ball at the edge of the penalty area, the second-year midfielder slipped a pass inside to Jost Hausendorf, who seemed certain to shoot and drew multiple defenders towards him. But instead, the big man cut the ball back to Norman, who ripped a first-time shot that threatened to tear through the netting with its power.

Hausendorf had the chance to add his own name to the scoresheet early in the second half, as he drove down the left flank in the 50th minute. However, he was unable to fully shake off his defender who harried him the whole way, which meant he couldn't get clean contact on his shot. While the Thunderbirds peppered the Heat goal throughout the night, racking up an impressive 22 shot attempts with 10 on target, they did not find another goal in the second half.

The T-Birds were put under some pressure by the hosts as the half wore on. Goalkeeper Bennett McKay saved the shutout in the 71st minute, after a long ball from a Heat defender turned into a one-on-one chance against the UBC netminder. McKay stood his ground though, and made a great stop for one of his three saves on the night.

The Thunderbirds held strong for the rest of the night, improving their record to 7-0-2 with the victory. Ranked #2 in U SPORTS and with the best record in Canada West, the 'Birds have some momentum behind them with just a few weeks left before the postseason begins.

Next up is a two-game home series against UNBC on Friday, October 4th and Saturday, October 5th. Friday's game begins at 7:30 p.m. (PT) at Thunderbird Stadium.
