T-Birds roll past Dinos with second consecutive shutout win

The UBC Thunderbirds could not have asked for a better way to open the Canada West season, as after defeating the Calgary Dinos 5-0 on Saturday, they followed it up with a 4-0 win this morning.

For the second straight game the T-Birds spread out the contributions, with four different goalscorers and two different goalies making their mark in the road victory.

It was the rookie Sydney Le who got the goals started with her second in as many games in the 16th minute. Danielle McBean then notched her first of the season five minutes before halftime to put UBC in a more comfortable position.

The second half was more of the same, as the T-Birds' offense continued to flow. Riley Brown made it 3-0 with her second goal of the weekend in the 43rd, before Birkley Anderson added one more off a penalty corner just before the end of the game.

This matchup was chippier than the first meeting between the two teams in terms of penalties. Both sides received two yellow cards over the course of the game, with the Dinos receiving a green card as well.

The strong performance this weekend means the Thunderbirds are now tied with the Victoria Vikes at 2-0, sitting atop the three-team Canada West standings. With four games against the Vikes (and two more against the Dinos) this season, it will be a hard-fought battle to see who emerges as Canada West champion.

UBC will hope to carry their momentum into next weekend when they travel to UVic for a pair of games on Saturday, September 21st, and Sunday, September 22nd. Both clashes with their island rival begin at 11:00 a.m. (PT). Following that, the T-Birds return to Wright Field for their home opener against Calgary on Saturday, September 28th.
