The UBC Thunderbirds strutted their stuff in new head coach Geoff Matthews' first game in charge, defeating the Calgary Dinos 5-0 to open their season. It was a consistent effort from the T-Birds, who netted goals in all four quarters and had four different players get their names on the scoresheet.
The visitors got out on the front foot early, with
Kaia Cooper scoring from a penalty corner just three minutes in.
Riley Brown doubled the lead early in the second quarter, before
Kenzie Girgis made it three just before halftime to put UBC in full control.
The lead quickly grew to four early in the second half. Rookie forward
Sydney Le, who got the nod to be in the starting lineup in her Canada West debut, scored her first goal for UBC in the 34
th minute. It was Cooper who then got the final goal in the 58
th minute, adding on a final marker in the last few minutes of the game to seal the statement victory.
Two of the Thunderbird goalies had a hand in the shutout. Two-time Canada West Goalkeeper of the Year
Hannah Rumble handled the first half, while second-year keeper
Robyn Goh stood tall in the second half.
The five goals are the most the T-Birds have scored in a game since 2021. They will hope to continue that momentum in the rematch against the Dinos tomorrow, September 15
th. The game is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. (PT) in Calgary.
