KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – UBC Thunderbirds second baseman
Aaron Marsh had started the day by dominating at the plate in registering three-hits and five RBI, powering the visitors to a convincing game one win and a Cascade Conference doubleheader split at Steen Sports Park.
UBC (16-8, 1-1 CCC) used a 17-hit attack to win Game 1, 13-3, with Tech riding the dominant effort from Chapple to a 5-1 victory in Game 2.
Marsh was 3-for-5 with five RBI in the opener for the T-Birds, breaking a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with an RBI single and putting an exclamation mark on the UBC win with a seventh inning grand slam.
Sean Heppner struck out nine in five-plus innings of work for the win, with
Will Anderson tossing three strong innings of relief for the save.
Jonny McGill was 4-for-6 with three RBI and
David Draayers added three hits for UBC.
Tyler Horner had the lone multi-hit game for the Owls (15-11, 1-1), going 2-for-5, including a seventh inning RBI single.
Game 2 belonged to Chapple, as the transfer struck out seven, keeping in check the top offensive club in the CCC.
OIT jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, scoring a run on a UBC error, with Julien Jones delivering a sacrifice fly and Ka'ala Tam roping an RBI triple. The Owls put the game away in the seventh, as Horner launched his league-leading ninth home run of the season – part of a 3-for-4 game.
Kyle Norton extended his hit streak to nine games with singles in both games, with Matthew Ortiz and Horner pushing their hit streaks to eight.
The two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow with another doubleheader, game one goes at 11 a.m. PT.
