T-Birds host Dinos, looking to remain unbeaten

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds look to remain unbeaten and improve to 3-0 on the Canada West Season when they host the Calgary Dinos at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre Sunday afternoon September 24th, with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.

It will be the second consecutive game on home field for the three-time defending conference champion T-Birds, who'll want to follow up on their convincing 74-0 home opening victory against the Alberta Pandas last Thursday.

The 'Birds improved to 2-0 on the strength of 12 tries on the night, including four from the reigning Canada West Women's Rugby Player of the Week, Adia Pye. The first-year centre made her presence felt in only the second game of her Canada West career, while veterans Savannah Bauder and Olivia Sarabura helped the cause by scoring two tries each.

The win moved the blue and gold to the number three overall ranking in Canada and head coach Dean Murten would like to see the squad continue the good habits they displayed in the overall team win vs Alberta.

"I was happy the way we scored tries on the wings," said Murten. "It's a good indication that we're getting the ball into the right areas. I thought some of our core skills went well but room for improvement. Without the ball we stayed patient and disciplines, this is an area of the game that we must continue to keep building on."

After a 3-3 campaign last season and a fourth-place finish in the conference, the Dinos are a younger group in 2023 that have started the season 0-4, which includes a 65-0 setback in Victoria Thursday night, only to see a quick turnaround to visit UBC three-days later.

"Calgary have suffered a few loses in their last games, however they are will coached and have some great athletes," added Murten. "I am expecting them to come back strong and show us some of the form we have become to expect from a Calgary team. We must not become complacent."

You can catch all the action Sunday on Canada West TV with kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
