WINNIPEG – Scoring 10 goals in a game for the first time in 11 years, the UBC Thunderbirds crushed the host University of Winnipeg Wesmen 10-0 Friday night to extend their season-long win streak to five.
Katalin Tolnai scored a hat trick and finished with seven total points to set a new program single game record while tying the Canada West high water mark set by Calgary's Jordan Smith in 2016.
"We challenged the team to push each other and I am very proud of the way the team played tonight," said UBC head coach
Jesse Symons following the team's incredible performance. "We had a great mindset to really take our chances and our movement was impeccable."
Taiya Dennehy got things rolling for the number one ranked 'Birds with her first goal in the blue and gold in the 11
th minute.
Sophie Damian collected the assist, one of three on the night for the fifth-year midfielder.
Tolnai scored her first two of the game in the 16
th and 34
th minute, respectively to give the visitors a 3-0 lead after the first 45.
Just five minutes into the re-start,
Sophia Kramer gave the 'Birds a 4-0 advantage with Tolnai picking up her first of four helpers.
Ella Sunde and
Aislin Phillips both scored their first of the campaign just four minutes apart with Tolnai assisting on both to make it 6-0, still with more than half an hour to play.
Ella Nuttall-Smith and
Nisa Reehal potted home another quick pair of UBC goals to make it 8-0 by the 80
th.
Tolnai completed the hat trick in the 84
th while
Vanessa Tome's first of the season got UBC to double digits less than a minute later.
In what was a completely dominant effort by the T-Birds, they outshot the host Wesmen 26-0, 17 of which were on target.
The loss drops the still winless Wesmen to 0-5-2 on the season.
As for the 'Birds, they remain in Winnipeg to face the 2-5 Manitoba Bisons on Saturday who earned a 3-0 win Friday night over the UNBC Timberwolves. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. PT and the game will be streamed live on
Canada West TV.
