WINNIPEG – Coming off a huge 10-0 win against the Winnipeg Wesmen the night prior, the No. 1 nationally ranked UBC Thunderbirds continued their offensive momentum to seal a 2-0 win against the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at Investors Group Field. The win improved their record to 6-0, while the Bisons fell to 2-6.
Despite the score, Bisons keeper Karina Bagi wrote a story of her own, picking up a program record 17 saves, which edged out the program's previous record of 15 set by Madison Wilford.
"We were excellent in posssession tonight and unlucky to go into the half tied 0-0," said UBC head coach
Jesse Symons. "But full credit to the team to continue to work together and find a couple quality goals."
The Thunderbirds would be led by
Nisa Reehal with one goal, one assist, and five shots on net out of her team's 20 total on the afternoon.
The first half would be dictated by a flurry of offence spearheaded by UBC forward
Vanessa Tome – and some superb saves by Bagi. Tome would dance into the box for three shots that just narrowly missed the back of the net, while Bagi would pick up a perfect eight saves on eight shots on the net.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Bisons only had one shot on target throughout the first. But for what Manitoba lacked in offence, they made up for in spectacular defence – thwarting many intimidating through-balls and long balls coming their way and keeping the score nil-nil going into halftime.
Tome would end up finding the back of the net shortly after halftime in the 58
thminute, connecting with a cross from
Nisa Reehal, and burying it deep her sixth goal of the season and the first goal of the match.
Moments later, the Bisons would get their best opportunity of the night – as forward Janelle Chomini raced up the right sideline and launched a shot that was centimetres away from being an equalizer.
UBC's forward Reehal would seal the deal for the Thunderbirds in the 80
thminute, picking up a clean goal off of a crafty assist by Katalin Tolani – stunting any chances of the Bisons coming back into the picture late.
Despite the swarming defence of the Bisons and the spectacular goalkeeping of Bagi, the Thunderbirds would apply relentless pressure right up to the final whistle, securing them their second win in two nights. UBC goalkeeper
Dakota Beckett stopped all five shots she faced to record another shutout.
"We will probably continue to face lots of numbers behind the ball and I feel the team is up for the challenge to find different ways to score," added Symons. "All in all it was great to stick to our identity with another shutout as well. We will keep this as a focus as we continue to move through the season."
The T-Birds return to home turf next week beginning with a meeting against MacEwan on Friday September 22nd at Ken Woods Field.
