‘Birds earn conference opening series win over Beacons

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds earned their first series win of the Cascade Collegiate Conference season with a 7-5 win over the Bushnell Beacons Sunday afternoon in Oregon.

The 'Birds (7-3, 2-1) scored five runs in the fourth inning, three of them off a Caitlin Bradley-Tse triple to open up a 5-0 lead. Lindsay Bell was credited with her second win in as many days while Shae Sever pitched a three-up, three-down bottom of the seventh for her first save of the season.

In addition to her solid closer appearance, Sever was instrumental in the batter's box as well as her RBI single in the fourth opened scoring. Sever scored a run of her own later that inning off a Kaitlyn Kim single before Bradley-Tse's triple.

Hanna Hansen hit a triple of her own in the fifth while a Keona Nordquist RBI single made it a 7-2 T-Birds lead in the sixth.

The Beacons (4-13, 1-5) mounted a comeback bid in their half of the sixth scoring three runs to come within two, but Sever shut the door in the seventh striking out two of her three batters.

In what's a busy first couple weeks of the conference season for UBC, the T-Birds will face the Northwest University Eagles for a doubleheader on Wednesday in Kirkland, Washington before returning to Vancouver for their home opener series against Eastern Oregon Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11 at Collings Field.
